Syracuse faces its second consecutive season with a new goalkeeper.

Freshman goalkeeper Asa Goldstock has been named the starting goalkeeper for Syracuse, head coach Gary Gait said on Wednesday. After months of practice and scrimmages, Gait announced the decision to his team earlier this week.

“Coming in I felt pressure,” Goldstock said. “I was a little nervous to see where I would stand, but I’ve grown to be in a family and the pressure is off a little bit.”

The No. 3 nation’s recruit, per Inside Lacrosse, was a 2016 US Lacrosse All-American and two-time USA Today All-American.

“We have confidence that she will be able to play well for us and handle our defense,” Gait said.

Goldstock replaces graduated-senior Allie Murray, who recorded a 38 percent save percentage and went 18-6 in net. Goldstock beat out junior Erin Coleman and sophomore Bri Stahrr to earn the starting position. She’ll get her first shot on Saturday when Syracuse takes on Boston College in its season opener at noon in the Carrier Dome.

“So far she’s been great for us,” SU attack Riley Donahue said. “She is going to be another one of those players, a game changer.”
